Earthship discussion

Here are some comments from my Earthship video (I had to repost it so these comments were lost), but I thought the conversation worth saving.

Great video and tour guide. My friend was seriously thinking about building an earthship home back in 1999, but he decided to build a Monolithic dome instead. I helped him that dome, and literally 100's of people stopped to look at the dome in the 2 weeks it took to build it way out in the country. Next thing I know I started building domes for people and I've built 52 dome homes since then from a small 1,600 square foot to over 8,000 square feet.

I would like to try building an earthship just to say I did it, but it's hard to get permits and where I build people are much more interested in their home being able to with stand EF-5 tornado's, heating them for pennies, and ease of building as far as permitting goes. When they see that FEMA has given the dome their highest safety rating of what they call "Near Absolute Protection" they're pretty much sold.

The tour guide is right when you approach the county for permits to build. If I have someone who is not willing to give a permit for a dome, I politely ask them if they've been keeping up with building practices, and let them know that for them to remain a valuable asset to the county, they need to keep up with newer, better and different ways of building.

I like what that student said at the end, because I've said the same thing for 15 years now, about people wanting the latest and greatest of all technologies but they protect it in buildings that start coming apart in the first sign of high winds.

Those earthships look like they could take a lot more wind than a standard home though. I really would like to see one being built. I might have to take some time and go check them out. I'm always looking for some thing new and different.

Keep the great videos coming.

If they used their refrigerators like ICE CHEST that is open from the top and not the face the cool would stay inside the refrigerator. Open the face door the cold air falls to the floor and that is not your goal. Save yourself a lot of money buy top opening freezers they are already well insulated if you want even more insulation get some Styrofoam sheets and cut the holes for the air to vent out but the extra insulation will add to the appliance efficiency.

absolutely love the autark earthship idea, built out of recycled and sustainable materials. fantastic what these guys are doing, lots of great ideas and hail to the pioneering work. however i saw so much wood built into these houses, even very large wood beams of trees that would take about at least 40 years to grow so tall and thick, and i take it that most of the wood built into these earthships isn't rescued or salvaged from the dump. sustainable means that if every human on the planet would live this way, the ecosystem (which humans are a part of) would thrive. so this part of the earthships clearly isn't sustainable and can easily be replaced with sustainable materials such as earth (in yemen, they build huge cathedral like houses, several stories high without any wood structure, solely with earth). it will be fabulous when the best ideas for a wholistic building/lifetstyle come together from all over the world, ancient, indigenous, modern and hightech to create harmonious, beautiful, affordable living dwellings. ashe :) <3<br />

Thank you for making videos. I have watched every one and enjoyed them all. I hope more people have the opportunity to see your videos and we, as humanity, can evolve into a more humane society.

From all the moisture and humidity created by the greenhouses, how do they prevent the plaster, concrete and wood from breaking down?

I think that's why they have so many vents and airflow going on.

Post-apocalyptic survival in Gaudian style :D they should advertise and let tourists come take pics, if it works in Spain, why not in New Mexico?

I have been trying to build an Earthship for 5 years here in Wisconsin but have been turned down each time by the county.
